Yep, that's me...QuiltCon 2017 Judge
Hello Out There!
As the announcement has been made this week that I am one of the
Judges for QuiltCon 2017, I thought that I would pop in and introduce
myself a little more fully. First let me say though how excited I am to be sharing this responsibility with Elizabeth Spannring and Erica Bonkowski.
And You Are?
For those that know me, you can probably imagine how excited I am about this responsibility. Yet, there are a ton of people probably scratching their head.
This is Me...
This is Me...
I'm a list-maker, so here we go:
--- I’ve been quilting for over 20 years (made my
first quilt in 1994…you can see it and many of my earlier quilts here [You Have To Start Somewhere]. There are definitely some doozies in there; but I'm proud of my beginnings. Want to see more recent quilts or what I've been up to...then check out this post, or this one.
--- I founded the St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild
(STLMQG) in July of 2010 as I was looking to find like-minded individuals who
had a similar aesthetic. Turns out I
found so much more.
--- I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from
Washington University in St. Louis.
While I majored in Fashion Design and minored in English Literature, my
4 years as an undergrad were filled with all sorts of classes from Art History
to Physics and lots in between.
--- While I have a corporate job that "pays the
bills". I started a pattern and design company several years ago and my quilt patterns are
sold both wholesale (via Checker & United Notions) and retail (viaPayHip). I also do freelance quilt design on occasion, creating concepts for magazines and fabric companies, as well as give
presentations to quilt guilds and various other art and community
organizations.
--- I have personally gone through innumerable critiques as an undergrad Art student, and been on the other side of things as a Juror and Judge both during my undergrad years and as an alumnus.

. --- While some of my work has been included in the big quilt shows such as QuiltCon, AQS, IQF, etc.; the vast majority of those that I have submitted to never panned out. Yet that doesn’t deter me from trying when I remember the pesky deadlines and see an opportunity where I believe my quilts would be a good fit.
QuiltCon 2017
I'm one of those crazy people who booked my QuiltCon 2016 and 2017 hotel rooms back in early 2015 when the East/West announcements were first made.
I am ecstatic to be a part of the quilting community, and my record (can you tell it's an election year) shows as such...having volunteered countless hours to my local guild; but also to The MQG organization as a whole; having served on
several committees in the past, and suited up as a Super Volunteer at two QuiltCons.
I am excited to take on this responsibility with
the same enthusiasm and determination that I express in all things.
While I continue to dabble here on my blog, I'm much more chatty/visible on Instagram. You can find me over there @KristyDaum

I'm looking forward to meeting lots of new people in Savannah, and reconnecting with those that I met previously. Let's do this!!
