ABRIDGED Modern Quilt Pattern

June 1st is the official release day for my new modern quilt pattern, ABRIDGED. This is a special one for many reasons, which I'll talk about here in a moment. For now, let's see some photos now, shall we...

ABRIDGED Quilt Pattern - Kristy Daum

ABRIDGED is a block-based quilt pattern written in a way that allows you to play with block placement, block rotation, and even changing up the row order giving you countless ways to create a more unique design. This quilt pattern is suitable for a confident beginner and would be a fast make for more experienced quilters.

Quilt Sizes

  • Crib 48" x 64"
  • Throw 64" x 80"
  • Twin 80" x 96"

The pattern includes detailed cutting instructions, full color layouts in each size and step-by-step directions for a delightful sewing experience.

The story of this quilt takes us back a few years, to 2018. I was making a quilt for each of my immediate family members and when I had asked my Dad, a Vietnam Veteran, what he wanted his quilt to look like, he said something patriotic, but modern.

I of course used the traditional red, white, and blue palette but chose to create a design that used 50 red/white segments to represent the 50 states, set against a field of blue. His original quilt can be seen here on Instagram

His quilt stirred an idea amongst several friends and I, and a few years later Modern Service Quilts was born. I was asked to turn my Dad's quilt into a pattern, which brings us to the topic of today's blogpost.

I chose the name ABRIDGED, because by definition it means shortened by omitting parts, while retaining the basic concept.  Seeing that this pays homage to an American Flag with it's red and white segments, and field of blue, yet scattered in a new way...it seemed apropos.

Now, let's talk more about the pattern shall we?
Jessica Schunke of Blue Sky Modern Craft is my Technical Editor. She ensured not only that the design and directions I wrote made sense, but that my quilt math, diagrams, and well...everything...were accurate and in order. It's this extra attention to detail that makes the difference.

How is ABRIDGED quilted?

Lilo Whitener-Fey from Trace Creek Quilting used a playful E2E (edge to edge) design called Chevrons, which adds movement.

The PDF digital pattern is available from my PayHip shop.

Don't let the patriotic color palette fool you, this quilt would look great in so many different combinations, including using scrappy prints for the 50 segments scattered across a field of low-volume.

Please be sure to use the hashtag  #abridgedquilt on Instagram when you post photos of your quilt, and don't forget to tag me @KristyDaum, so I can see and share your progress.
