Scattered Squares Block Tutorial
Introducing Scattered Squares; which reminds me of my Modernized D9P in that you can play with negative space to create something that is both random and organized at the same time.
Now let's get started.
I decided to play with a handful of low-volume background fabrics and mix them with something unexpected...Neon!...although later I did decide to lose the blue.
This tutorial does not tell you what fabrics to use for each piece, as I hope that you will be adventurous and try something that is unexpected.
Block Cutting for one 9" block
Piece A
Piecing Units
Unit A/C
This block tutorial will provide you with cutting and piecing information to make one 9" block; which can be multiplied to create a larger 18" block...perfect to use for a quilting bee or even a wall quilt.
Want to make something a little more elaborate? I included a chart at the end of this post; which should be helpful if you want to make a Baby Quilt or Lap Quilt.
Now let's get started.

Piece A
- Cut (5) 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares
Piece B
- Cut (2) 2" x 5" rectangles
Piece C
- Cut (5) 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
Piecing Units
Unit A/C
- Sew (1) of your A squares (3 1/2" x 3 1/2") to (1) of your C rectangles (2" x 3 1/2") RST
- Press seams open
- Repeat the above four more times, creating five A/C units
Unit A/C/B
- Sew (1) of your A/C units that you made above to (1) of your B rectangles (2" x 5") RST
- Press seams open
- Repeat the above one more time, creating two A/C/B units
Block Layout
- Following the block arrangement below, sew your three A/C units together [left side of diagram]
- Press seams open
- Sew your two A/C/B units together [right side of diagram]
- Press seams open
- Sew the units you created on the [left side] to the units you created on the [right side]
- Press seams open
Your finished block should now look similar to the below diagram, taking into consideration that your color/print layout will be different...of course.

At the time this tutorial was written I only made 4 blocks; but through the magic of PhotoShop, I am able to show you what 16 blocks look like.
